Your trip is not complete without a visit to the Eastern Oregon Museum.

Located in historic Haines, Oregon, along the Elkhorn Drive Scenic Byway.

“The people of Haines have discovered an intriguing sort of time travel. Their ‘time machine’ is housed in a one-time school gym and it is composed of a myriad of parts, all from the past and all ready to transport the visitor back through the years.”  – Walt Zimmerman, Democrat Herald

ANTHONY LAKES SKI RESORT EXHIBIT IS READY FOR THE PUBLIC!

Open House will be on October 26th from 3 to 5 p.m.

We have been busy! After a wonderful summer, our group is still working hard to make our museum even better, starting with our Anthony Lakes exhibit. The enclosure is complete, the lighting has been finished and we are inviting the public to join us at an Open House. Here are the details: Sunday, October 26th from 3 to 5 p.m. Our Open House will be outdoors, so please dress accordingly. There will be refreshments, raffle prizes and stories from the folks who have worked and/or skied at Anthony Lakes Ski Resort over the years. Champ Bond’s snowblower will be on display, along with other items and informational kiosks. Please wear any Anthony Lakes “swag” (hats, t-shirts, pins, etc.) from the past or present.

We are extremely grateful to the Leo Adler Trust, the Buerkel-Zoellner Foundation and the Oregon Community Foundation for their generous support of our newest exhibit.  Many local businesses and individual have also contributed a great deal of time, money and even materials to make this lighted display attainable.

We Have New Blinds!

After adding our new windows in the summer of 2024, we were able to order blinds to keep the sun at bay and help insulate our building during the winter.  The blinds are a marvel unto themselves.  They are electric and are run by a remote!  Oh, my!  We are feeling spoiled and are very grateful to our grant provider, the Baker County Transient Lodging Tax Committee, for making our lives much easier, and most of all, for helping to preserve our precious treasures by allowing us to shade them from the bright sunlight that can cause damage to some of our more fragile items.  Please stop by next summer, or by appointment, to check them out.  We’d be happy to give you a demonstration (that’s how excited we are to have them!).

NEW HOURS FOR NEXT SUMMER!

Many folks come to see us in the summer, but occasionally we miss someone because we aren’t there.  We don’t like that!  So, we have decided to add an hour to our schedule each day next summer.  We will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays, after Memorial Day in 2026!

FIRST HAND STORIES ARE THE BEST!

The EO Museum holds many treasures, and sometimes we get to hear first-hand the story of an item.  This is called a “primary resource” and in the world of history, it’s the BEST and most IMPORTANT resource of all.  We were truly blessed to have a wonderful lady, Judy Head, come and see us this summer and tell us her memories of this loom.  She entertained us with stories of her small, slight grandpa, and her large grandma, who insisted this loom would come with them over the bumpy, dusty roads from Iowa to North Powder.  This piece, along with spindles, weavings and yarns are proudly displayed in their own special corner.  We hope you will come and see them, and read Judy’s story.

Our roof has been rebuilt and re-covered and our gutters have been replaced. Our roofing company, Landmark Roofing, did an amazing job, digging deep and finding the causes of our leaks. We are thrilled to know that our roof is sound and will be keeping us dry for many, many years to come. The gutters were replaced by Top Notch Roofing & Gutters, which will keep the water from dripping directly down the sides of our building, ensuring dry siding and windows. Our deepest appreciation goes to the Oregon Community Foundation, the Roundhouse Foundation and the Leo Adler Foundation for funding these projects.

D.E. and Jane Clark Foundation of the
Oregon Community Foundation
Provides the EO Museum with a great boost!

The museum has been awarded $4,200 to assist in much-needed upgrades to its office.  A large volunteer effort is underway to digitize the thousands of items housed throughout the four-building complex.  Volunteers have been working valiantly under very cramped circumstances as they photograph, scan, and enter the information on museum computers.

The funds will go to expand the workspace and develop reinforced shelving for housing the large volume of historic photos and documents being scanned and preserved. The EO Museum is extremely grateful to the Clark Foundation and to OCF for the continued support of the Haines and North Powder areas!

Ann Bradford gave us a quick concert on the 4th of July, and considering this piano withstands 30 degree weather in the winter (our building isn’t heated), and 80 degree heat in the summer, it sounded darn good! Thank you, Ann!

New Eastern Oregon Museum Signs

Our EO Museum board is excited to announce our new signs have been ordered and should be up by the end of October. Our signs, advertising the museum on the Haines Highway (Highway 30) and at the Haines City Park, have been fading over the past few decades and we made the decision to purchase new ones. We loved the old-fashioned look of the originals, and even discovered that one of the signs, on the north side at the city park, was an original by the late Jack Stevens, who was an artist, entrepreneur and owner of Radium Hot Springs swimming pool for a number of years. The vote was unanimous to purchase new signs and use the old designs. Our local Oregon Sign Company was happy to help us out. Let us know what you think!

Queen and Grand Marshall – the Griffins

Our very own Judy Griffin was the Queen of the Haines 4th of July parade this year. Judy and her husband, Larry, have been long -time supporters of our small town, and Judy is our Secretary Extraordinaire on our Museum Board. She is also the head digitizer, making sure every item is recorded and saved for posterity.

She is a tireless worker, and a fountain of knowledge. Congratulations, Judy! Thank you for all you do for our museum!
