Your trip is not complete without a visit to the Eastern Oregon Museum.
Located in historic Haines, Oregon, along the Elkhorn Drive Scenic Byway.
“The people of Haines have discovered an intriguing sort of time travel. Their ‘time machine’ is housed in a one-time school gym and it is composed of a myriad of parts, all from the past and all ready to transport the visitor back through the years.” – Walt Zimmerman, Democrat Herald

Our Office Remodel is Complete
We are working in an updated office, thanks to the D. E. and Jane Clark Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.
There is more counter space than ever before, and the added shelving is already full of our notebooks that are waiting to be scanned. This much needed remodel came just in time, as we have added another “digitizer” to our group. Meet Jan Richard, who has loads of experience with the use of computers. She has been a great asset to our team of ladies who put in many hours getting the two-dimensional documents, as well as our three-dimensional items, recorded into our Past Perfect Museum Software. Shane Moe and his crew from Moe’s Country Cupboards in North Powder, Oregon, did an excellent job setting us up for many more years preserving our precious possessions.
EO Museum Receives New Windows!
As of July 8th, the Museum building is being updated with the installation of fourteen new windows.
We have been surviving with single pane glass for the last couple of decades, and now we have beautiful, double pane windows! The windows, manufactured by Marvin, are single hung, six by six grids. We will be able to open the windows and let the fresh air circulate. Those of you who have been in museums know that air circulation is so important. We are so excited to feel and smell the new life that will be breathed into our sweet, old building.
Our sincere thanks goes to The Ramsay Family Foundation and Ed and Cathy Ramsay for funding this project. Sid Johnson and Co. are the contractors who are handling this challenging job. Our collections are being moved so the workers can put on the trim, but we are still open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday through Saturday until Labor Day.
Capital Campaign Complete
Our roof has been rebuilt and re-covered and our gutters have been replaced. Our roofing company, Landmark Roofing, did an amazing job, digging deep and finding the causes of our leaks. We are thrilled to know that our roof is sound and will be keeping us dry for many, many years to come. The gutters were replaced by Top Notch Roofing & Gutters, which will keep the water from dripping directly down the sides of our building, ensuring dry siding and windows. Our deepest appreciation goes to the Oregon Community Foundation, the Roundhouse Foundation and the Leo Adler Foundation for funding these projects.

Provides the EO Museum with a great boost!
The museum has been awarded $4,200 to assist in much-needed upgrades to its office. A large volunteer effort is underway to digitize the thousands of items housed throughout the four-building complex. Volunteers have been working valiantly under very cramped circumstances as they photograph, scan, and enter the information on museum computers.
The funds will go to expand the workspace and develop reinforced shelving for housing the large volume of historic photos and documents being scanned and preserved. The EO Museum is extremely grateful to the Clark Foundation and to OCF for the continued support of the Haines and North Powder areas!
Ann Bradford gave us a quick concert on the 4th of July, and considering this piano withstands 30 degree weather in the winter (our building isn’t heated), and 80 degree heat in the summer, it sounded darn good! Thank you, Ann!
Our 2024 Eastern Oregon Museum Camp was Successful!
We had a grand time at our 2024 Eastern Oregon Museum History Camp! Some highlights were metal detecting with Gerry from Capitol Prospecting in Baker City, gem hunting with Tom Morey, canning, dutch oven cooking, sourdough bread and small woodlands management.
Of course, the EOU GOSTEM mobile trailer was a huge hit, where they used computer coding to program small robots and had some fun with an archeology simulation, discovering what fossilized dinosaur tracks may have looked like.
Our program welcomes ending second through ending fifth graders for hands-on history activities. Watch for next year’s dates on this website as they become available!
Our many thanks to the Buerkel-Zoellner Foundation and The Edna Harrell Children’s Fund.
